I am pleased to announce that on May 18th the Boonton Township School District’s Teen Advocacy Group (TAG) will be the recipient of a prestigious award. The New Jersey School Board Association will be awarding TAG with the “Innovations in Special Education Award.” As director of TAG, I am not at all surprised that this program is being recognized. Over the last 4 years we have been able to watch, as young people’s lives have been dramatically affected through the increase of social interactions and peer mentoring.
The goal of TAG is to provide an informal setting where activities presented enhance social skill development, advocacy skills, life skills and use of community resources. Through a variety of planned activities, TAG members learn to develop skills necessary to successfully interact among their peers and advocate for themselves in a variety of social and community based settings. Scheduled activities in the community (examples: bowling, miniature golf, dining in a local restaurant) give TAG members an opportunity to apply the skills presented in meetings to real life settings.
